Fuchsia Specialist Help & Advice

Bringing on Young Fuchsias
  • Pot your young fuchsia into a 5 inch pot. On mild days put it outside in a sheltered spot to harden it off.
  • Remove the growing tips (they can be used as cuttings!) to make the plant bushier which will give more flowers.
  • Feed every few days with a weak solution of HIGH-NITROGEN fuchsia feed. When buds begin to form, switch to HIGH-POTASH fuchsia feed.

Planting Out Hardies
  • Hardy fuchsias are only hardy when planted in the open ground. They are unlikely to survive in tubs or pots.
  • They should be planted out when all danger of frost is finished. They need a full summer to get established, so it is not advisable to make permanent plantings after mid-July.
  • Dig out a saucer-shaped depression about 18 inches across and 5 inches deep. Dig in plenty of peat and plant at the bottom of the depression.
  • As you water (which you will have to do for the first summer) the depression will slowly get filled in. At the end of the season make sure that it is filled in so that the ground is flat again. Effectively, this means that the rootball of the established plant is now buried 5 inches below ground level.
  • Frost will penetrate 5 inches in a severe winter, but will not touch the rootball, which is where new shoots will come from next year.
  • The top will almost certainly be killed off in the winter, but do not prune the dead wood away until the spring.
